The Bible is the inerrant word of God.  It is absolute Truth.  The Bible is the one source in all the world where God has revealed Himself to people.

          Did you ever need information in order to accomplish something, or need information in how to do a task? Have you traveled and realized you needed to have some information in order to arrive at your planned destination? Most likely we can answer "Yes" to those questions! If we’re honest, we’d have to agree that most of us are not born knowing how to build a house, drive a car, make a meal, or find the place where we need to arrive. We need information, we need help, and we need a truthful and accurate source to help us succeed in our plans!

For the Christian man, woman, boy or girl, the Bible is the source of help, the compass, the direction, and the truth for living. When you speak to a Christian and you ask them about their faith, it isn’t long before they are saying something like: "The Bible says…", or "this is what I learned about God in the Bible…" or you might hear them say, "this is not my opinion, this is what the Word of God, the Bible says about…" My friend there is absolute truth, there is objective truth-everything isn’t just a matter of opinion. We can know truth today, we do have accurate and adequate direction for living.

Christians believe the Bible is the inerrant word of God, is absolutely true, and is the one source in all the world where God has revealed Himself to people.

        In the New Testament, the apostle Paul in writing and giving instruction to his co-worker Timothy, said to Timothy "continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Tim 3:14-17

When Paul writes that all Scripture is God-breathed, he is saying that God has inspired men to write down just those thoughts God is communicating. God is the great communicator!

        The Bible is 66 books written by over 40 authors (ranging from priests, to kings, from shepherds, to farmers!) in three different languages over a span of about 1500 years. And yet the Bible presents a unified message of the redemption and love of God for His people throughout history. History is in reality His Story—the story of God and His relationship and His revelation of Himself to men, women, boys and girls!

        How did God communicate to people? Scholars explain the process of God communicating to people in four ways: first is revelation: where God reveals Himself and reveals truth to people—for example in nature, and in our conscience. The second ways God communicates to people is through inspiration: how God gives His words to people and insures the accurate recording of His revelation.     Peter expresses this in the New Testament in his letter this way: Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:20-2:1

We also see the ministry of the Holy Spirit as God communicates by illumination which refers to the ministry of the Holy Spirit whereby He enables people to understand the Bible and the truths found in Scripture. God has communicated reliably to people also by Canonicity which refers to the process of recognizing and pulling together those books and letters of the Old Testament and the New Testament which make up the Scriptures, the Bible as we know it today.

        It is important for people today to have confidence in the truthfulness and the accuracy of the Bible. If you are going to base your life on the Bible you need to be confident and have respect for the authority of the Scriptures. The Bible is not merely man’s thoughts, man’s ideas, or man’s work, the Bible is the work of God and as your read the Bible for yourself what you see is that it is consistent, it rings true in daily living. Also you will see prophecies, given centuries earlier, fulfilled in time, you will also see people whose lives have been totally transformed for the good because of what they have read in the Bible! The word of God is powerful and effective, and it has the power to produce faith in people who were spiritually dead to God.

        There is much evidence that the Bible we have today is remarkable true to the original writings. Remember we don’t have the original manuscripts that Moses wrote, or that Ezra or David, or Peter or Paul wrote. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls confirmed the amazing reliability of some of the copies of the Old Testament, also of the thousands of copies made by hand of the New Testament before 1500 AD more than 5,300 Greek manuscripts still exist today. We have more copies of the New Testament than we have of ancient writers such as Plato or Aristotle.

        The prophecies of the Bible testify to the supernatural character of the Scriptures and validate the Bible as the word of God. Many prophecies from the Old Testament were fulfilled in the life of Jesus, in some cases the prophecies were made thousands of years before He was born. The odds of even a few of the prophecies about Jesus being fulfilled are statistically astronomical, but that fact that more than 100 prophecies about Jesus, His birth, life, crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection are clearly supernatural. Something only God can do. That is a great place to begin to study for yourself: Begin reading the New Testament the gospel of Matthew and look to see where the Old Testament prophecies were fulfilled in the life of Christ.

        The greatest testimony to the truth of the Scriptures is the fact that Jesus read the Bible, the Jewish Scriptures which we call the Old Testament.  Jesus believed the Scriptures, perfectly followed them, lived by them, and used them to teach others.

        After, the resurrection of Christ, a couple of His disciples were broken hearted and were giving up on ministry, they were downcast, depressed, dejected, disappointed, all those things we too experience when circumstances don’t add up. Suddenly Jesus appears to them, and joins them in their journey. After a few moments of conversation, Jesus helps them in their confusion and misunderstanding by telling them of Scripture. In Luke we read : Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?" "What things?" he asked.

"About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see." He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"

They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon." Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."            They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have."        When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence.        He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."            Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.   Luke 24:13-53

        Carefully looking back, you will see that Jesus used the Scriptures going all the way back to Moses and then moving forward to the other prophets and the psalms. Why did Jesus do this? He did this in order to teach them the truth about Himself. Jesus opened their minds using the Scriptures so that the disciples could understand, Who He is and what He came to do. He taught them truth and direction for living. Jesus believed the Scriptures.

        Jesus made many direct statements about the divine origin and authority of the Old Testament. Jesus did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. Jesus said "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matt 5:17-19

        What is the major reason that Christians believe the authority of Scripture?      What is the major reason that Christians believe that the Bible is God’s Word, written and inspired by His Spirit. It is because of Jesus. We believe in Jesus, the Son of God. We believe that Jesus came from God and spoke from God. We believe what He taught and submit ourselves to Him and His teaching. Jesus believed the Old Testament Scriptures. But what about the New Testament, it wasn’t written at the time of Jesus? Can we believe it is the word of God as well? Yes, we can! Those who wrote the New Testament were given the authority of Christ and the promise of His presence with them. Jesus promised his disciples that His Spirit would bring to their remembrance all that He had said to them and that the Holy Spirit would teach them many more things. These promises, without a doubt, referred to the coming writings of the New Testament which have come to us through the first disciples of Jesus and the apostle Paul. Jesus had given personal preparation to His men, He gave them personal historical experience with Him as they lived and worked with Him for three years, and He gave them personal special inspiration for the purposes of writing the New Testament Scriptures.

Peter writing of his experiences with Jesus Christ said, "We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty." 2 Peter 1:16

The apostle wrote with authority knowing their experience was unique a gift from God. John writing of Jesus said: That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete. 1 John 1:1-4

        The authority of the Scriptures comes from the teachings of Jesus Christ. He endorsed the Old Testament and He personally made provision through His disciples for the writing of the New Testament.

Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Rom 10:17-18

Do you need help in living life? Do you need to find a place where you will be told the truth about yourself and about spiritual things? Do you want to know God and to know His plans for you and for your life? Then you need accurate information and you need accurate direction. You will find them, my friend, in the Bible. Please begin to read the Bible for yourself. Begin in the Gospel of Mark, then read the Gospel of John. You will find both in the New Testament. Then read the letter to the Ephesians and read the letter to the Colossians. All these will help you as will the Gospels of Luke and Matthew, these will help you know Jesus. Then read the letter to the Romans so that you will know God’s salvation plan!

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Heb 4:12-13
